Twelve-year-old Emily Gordon and her older sister, Jen, are staying with Grandpa for a year while their father is in California and their mother is in Afghanistan. Emily loves being around Grandpa’s and his neighbor’s horses, but Jen is not happy and takes it all out on her sister. Emily reluctantly does math homework so she can have her own horse. Eew!
Grandpa won’t buy the horse Emily wants. But none of the other horses they look at is right for her.
And Jen only gets nastier when Mom goes missing in the Afghan mountains. Through Emily’s growing bond with the horse she’s riding, she gathers more courage.
